Male Brow Lift
How Do Men Benefit From A Brow Lift?

As we age, it is not uncommon in men for the upper facial features, particularly the skin around the eyes, eyebrows, and forehead, to begin to sag and wrinkle. A brow lift is an aesthetic surgical procedure that improves the appearance of these areas. Also known as a forehead lift, a brow lift is useful to correct:

  • Sagging eyebrows
  • Horizontal wrinkle lines in the forehead
  • “Frown lines,” vertical creases between the eyebrows
  • Wrinkles and sagging on the bridge of the nose
  • Breathing issues from a deviated septum or nasal polyps.

More and more males are opting to undergo a brow lift to increase confidence and self-esteem, and to restore symmetry to the face. At the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago, we understand that each patient’s goals and motivations are unique, which is why each patient at our practice receives personalized care, an individualized course of treatment, and the safest and most innovative techniques.

Am I a candidate for Male Brow Lift Surgery?

Visible signs of facial aging generally appear as wrinkles, sagging features, and excess skin. The vertical creases between the eyebrows, or frown lines, can give the constant appearance of being somber or angry. As facial skin begins to sag, the eyebrows may sink, which makes us appear tired. Brow ptosis, a condition in which the upper eyelid droops involuntarily, can lead to decreased vision and asymmetry of the face.

If any of these signs are familiar to you, you may be a good candidate for a brow lift. Candidates should be in overall good health, non-smokers, and lack any medical conditions that may hinder the ability to heal properly.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR CONSULTATION

If you are a healthy male and believe you may be a candidate for a brow lift, the best course of action is to contact the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago and schedule a consultation. Your board-certified plastic surgeon will review your medical history with you and perform a facial evaluation to determine the best treatment plan for your aesthetic goals.

You and your plastic surgeon will discuss any and all aspects of the procedure, through recovery, as well as any potential risks associated with a brow lift. If you have any questions about any of these factors, the consultation is the best time to ask.

How is Male Brow Lift Surgery Performed?

After a general anesthetic is administered, your plastic surgeon will determine the best technique to employ based on the necessary corrections. In an endoscopic brow lift, small incisions are made within the hairline, to hide any visible scarring that may occur during the healing process, and special instruments are placed into the incisions to perform the procedure.

In an open brow lift, a coronal incision is made across the top of the head. The forehead skin is lifted, allowing the surgeon access to correct visible creases and wrinkles in the upper face.

Depending on your aesthetic goals, your plastic surgeon will make the necessary corrections, which may include repositioning tissue and muscle, tightening muscles, redistributing skin, and lifting the brow.

The incisions are closed with either removable or absorbable sutures. The final results of the brow lift will be visibly apparent within a few weeks of the procedure, after swelling and bruising completely subside.

Recovery after Male Brow Lift Surgery

After the procedure, the forehead and incision sites may be covered with a bandage and/or ointment to reduce swelling and minimize bruising. A brow lift is an outpatient procedure, so patients are typically allowed to return home the same day.

Your surgeon will give you specific instructions regarding how to care for the surgical site, medications to take, and when to return for a follow-up visit. It is important after a brow lift to keep your head elevated to minimize swelling and avoid any rigorous physical activity.

Do not use ice directly on the surgical site, since that will reduce blood flow and delay healing. Sutures can usually be removed within a week after the procedure is performed.

Potential Risks Associated with Male Brow Lift Surgery

Although rare, any surgical procedure comes with potential complications. Those specifically associated with a brow lift may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Temporary hair loss at incision sites
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Eye irritation

Before undergoing any surgical procedure, make sure that your surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and that the surgery is being carried out in an accredited surgical facility

How much does Male Brow Lift Surgery Cost?

The cost of a brow lift can vary greatly depending on a number of factors, including location, the surgical center, the surgeon, and your aesthetic goals. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the national average cost of a brow lift is around $3,400. It is rare that a health insurance provider will cover any of the costs associated with a brow lift, so be sure to talk with your plastic surgeon during your consultation about payment options.

This is a 2 year follow-up revision rhinoplasty case. The patient had had 2 prior rhinoplasties in the past and was bothered by the nasal deviation, the dorsal hump, and the under-rotated and under-projected tip. In the post-operative views, you can see the nose is straighter, symmetric dorsal aesthetic lines have been established, the dorsal hump was removed, and the tip was elevated and rotated. It’s amazing how a more symmetric and proportional nose improves the balance and overall aesthetics of the face. Posted with permission.

This is a great example of how buccal fat removal changes the face. Buccal fat removal involves removing fat from the lower cheeks and the purpose is to narrow the lower 1/3 of the face. With removal of the buccal fat pad, the face appears less round and more angular or V-shaped. Buccal fat removal was popularized and trending during the pandemic, however, not everyone is a good candidate for this procedure. Ideal candidates are younger patients in their 20-30’s with a rounder face, and excess volume of the lower cheeks. As we age, the face loses volume and therefore patients in their 40’s plus may not be good candidates. An article in our journal from 2021, The Role of Buccal Fat Pad in Facial Aesthetic Surgery, by Drs. Rohrich and Stuzin, highlighted that this procedure can be beneficial in certain patients but if over resected or performed in the wrong patient, can lead to premature aging and midface distortion. How important is the chin in a rhinoplasty case? This patient’s results show how important the nose-chin relationship is for a balanced and proportional profile. This patient had a crooked nose, a prominent dorsal hump, and a very deficient chin. After straightening her nose, removing the dorsal hump, lifting and refining the tip, and performing a sliding genioplasty; look how much her profile has changed aesthetically for the better.

In facial feminization surgery, a common question we get is how do we contour the forehead and orbital rim. There are two main techniques that craniofacial surgeons utilize. A type 1 technique is where we use a burr or shaving device to shave and contour the bone to set it back or make it less prominent. To be a good candidate for this technique, one would have to have thick bone, a smaller frontal sinus, and less frontal bossing. A type 3 technique is where we use a saw to cut off the outer part of the frontal sinus bone, shave down the forehead and then replace the bone with titanium plates and screws. Good candidates for this procedure are patients with thin bone of the frontal sinus, a large frontal sinus and significant frontal bossing. We determine which technique would best achieve a patient’s goals through a clinical exam and a CT scan. Posted with permission. Videos are educational.
